How Kailua by RISC Zero works
Kailua introduces a hybrid approach to rollups, combining the cost efficiency of optimistic rollups with the fast finality of ZK rollups. Built on Optimism’s Kona suite, Kailua leverages a novel dispute resolution mechanism based on zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs, eliminating the need for traditional interactive bisection games. Rollup states are proposed and challenged using a proposer/challenger system, with disputes resolved efficiently in a single transaction via RISC Zero zkVM.
Advantages of Kailua by RISC Zero
Hybrid rollup designs are revolutionizing scalability by combining the best of optimistic and zero-knowledge approaches. Below are key advantages of this model:
- Fast Finality: Achieves settlement times as short as one hour, far faster than traditional optimistic rollups' 7-day challenge period.
- Cost-Effective: Reduces proving costs, as ZK proofs are required only for disputes. This hybrid model avoids constant proving overhead, making it viable for rollups with high throughput or frequent empty blocks.
- Fully Validity-Compatible: Supports intermittent "heartbeat" validity proofs, with the flexibility to gradually increase their frequency until proofs are required for every block—enabling a smooth transition to full validity rollups when ready.
- Upgradability: Seamlessly upgrades OP Stack rollups (v1.4+).
- Open Source: Fully open-source and backed by RISC Zero’s robust ecosystem, offering transparency and extensibility.
